Baby Aardvark

The private vet clinic in town got this 5 month old baby Aardvark in for surgery.  She had a broken humerus after being attacked by dogs.  The clinic performed surgery and will keep it two weeks after which she will go to a rehab center and then hopefully released back into the wild. She was FREAKING ADORABLE!!

Donkeys

Remember I said before that the donkeys roam free in town?  Well, the locals, in order to try and keep their donkeys close to home will often hobble their front feet and/or tether the donkey to another donkey (rope tied around each donkey's neck and then they are tied together). They usually make the hobbles too tight which causes sores on the fetlocks. They also will tether them so tightly around the neck that they cannot graze or lay down.  It is really horrible.  I spent a lot of time going around attempting to untie them.  I say attempted as I was only successful once.  Seriously, these donkeys are petrified of people (especially whites) so they will not even allow us to approach them.   The back legs are not hobbled so they can (and will) kick you so you have to be careful.  It is really a sad situation.  I wish they could understand I was only trying to help :(

Health Form

OMG.  This is seriously ridiculous.  Kelly, the vet tech, had to apply for a residence permit as she is attempting to stay in Botswana for a year or so to work at MAWS. She had to go to a doctor and have him sign this form that "proves" that she is not an idiot or an imbecile.........  Please read this document.  It is hilarious!  Kelly took this to the doctor's office.  His receptionist looked at it, looked at Kelly, signed it and asked for $60.  Can you say scam?

Pharmacy

The pharmacy is weird.  It's kind of like a Walgreen's or other drugstore but anything small (like chapstick or anything think is small enough you would steal) is behind the counter and you have to ask for it.  Also, if you want some type of medication (including things that contain codeine) you just have to ask the pharmacist and she will give it to you. No doctor involved.  No prescription.  Just weird.  They don't have a grand selection but you can get by.  They also have all these "concoctions" and other weird stuff that they sell and they are serious.  These are NOT jokes or gag gifts.......

Road Markers

Instead of using road signs, people will make a road marker so that people know where to turn off to find their house.  These are redonkulous!  Why they can't just use a piece of wood and spray paint their name on it is beyond me.  They put up a pole and then attach all kinds of random household items on it.   Seems like overkill to me.  Guess it works though! lol

I hope you enjoyed this randomness.  I am now off to South Africa again.  This time to the town of Sidbury about 60 miles northeast of Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape.  I will be at Kwantu, a private game reserve.  Looking forward to it!
